 Perach over the years

The PERACH project began in 1974 with a handful of students from the Weizmann Institute of Science giving tuition to children in need.

 

Since then it has expanded beyond recognition. By the turn of the millennium approximately 20% of all the students in Israel’s institutes of higher education were participating in the project each year.

 

The name “PERACH” has become synonymous with high-quality tutoring and mentoring services in Israel. Dozens of thousands of children from over two hundred towns throughout the country receive not only scholastic assistance, but also personal attention and enrichment. And the numbers continue to grow steadily from year to year.


 PERACH has expanded not only in numbers, but also in the scope of its activities. In addition to individual mentoring, PERACH develops specialized group activities for schools and provides instructors for this purpose. And today, not only young children are eligible to become mentees. PERACH’s programs have expanded to include high school pupils—leading to an increase in the number of pupils to sit their matriculation exams and to pass them successfully. Even university and college students with special needs are eligible to become mentees: blind or dyslexic students and those who are in danger of dropping out may receive personal guidance from fellow students.

 

And on an international level

The success of PERACH has led to its emulation worldwide. Being the largest organization of its kind, it has become an international role model, with PERACH-like projects now operating in over fifteen countries.
